DESCRIPTION OF SITE
The proposed Greenview Recycling and Disposal municipal solid waste landfill is located approximately 1 1/2 mile east of U.S. Highway 41 & 1/4 mile south of State Road 32. The proposed facility contains approximately 91 acres for disposal. See Map 1 and Map 2 to see the location. As a municipal solid waste landfill it would be available to accept municipal solid waste from anyone or any company that wanted to send their waste to the landfill. The proposed site is designed to hold 14 million tons of waste and has an expected and planned facility life of 20 years.
There are several key problems with this landfill permit request.
The biggest concern is that the landfill location is located directly over a major aquifer. See the Greenview Landfill hydrogeologic report for more details.
In addition, there is blatant disregard for the minimum setbacks required by State Law. The landfill boundary is located less than ½ the specified distance from local wells and from Scott’s Prairie Christian School. The applicant claims these items do not have to be considered because they were not in existence before 1991 when the first application was submitted to IDEM. This is another example of special exemptions that have been granted to this applicant. 17 years is an unreasonable length of time to ignore the changes made by adjoining land owners. The community has been held “hostage” by the litigation that has continued through the years. See the HISTORY tab for more details.
